This design/build project was performed by Love & Associates, Inc. and Left Hand Excavating. The project provided riparian and fisheries habitat enhancement for an 800 linear foot reach of the St. Vrain Creek near upstream areas inhabited with two rare native fish species, the common shiner and the stone roller. This project was undertaken in connection with the settlement of an enforcement action taken by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, Water Quality Control Division, for alleged violations of the Colorado Water Quality Control Act and had a legally mandated construction deadline and budget. Features of the project included the installation of 275 l.f. of pool shaping, 252 l.f. of rock vanes, 60 l.f. of root wad bank protection, disposal of 200 l.f of crushed vehicles previously used for a retaining wall along the stream that were replaced with 190 l.f. of boulder toe wall, live staking of willows and the planting of over 100 cottonwood poles and 60 riparian shrubs to enhance a degraded riparian area, and seeding and stabilizing all disturbed areas.
